Food

Food is more than fuel to meet bodily needs.  How and what we eat is a part of who we are, our families and traditions, our personal history, and unique physical requirements.  I work with my clients to find long-term, customized solutions to their nutrition goals.  We are more than individual bundles of carbs and fat and protein.  Our bodies are evolved to enjoy a varied and enjoyable range of foods.  I believe that food plays a vital role in our well-being – physical and emotional, and it’s my passion to help each client achieve that balance between food and nutrition that will nurture their bodies and spirits.

My Method

Metabolism specific energy intake (calories) and a customized macronutrient prescription is the path for long-term fat loss and lean mass preservation. Metabolism Based Eating (MBE) is the path forward for folks looking to lose unhealthy body fat and keep their lean muscle! This is the breakthrough formula that will enable you to achieve the results you have wanted for your health and appearance.

Why It Works

We are all different.  A one-size-fits-all nutrition approach is sometimes effective, but usually it’s not.  I have seen diet fads come and go, nutrition guidelines and recommendations change, and a steady stream of food and nutrition misinformation. My clients are hungry for clear guidance, practical solutions, and effective strategies - a guide to help navigate the sea of health information.

My approach is built on listening to my clients, seeking to understand their lifestyle and limitations, offering solutions and strategies to achieve their health goals. The desire to lose excess body-fat is a common concern of many of my clients and working to improve body composition is often a cornerstone of their nutrition plan.

Strength

Why I Would Rather Be Strong

“My story – I started swimming competitively when I was 9 yrs old and by the time I was 17 I had 3 shoulder surgeries.  I never stopped playing sports or exercising, but I have always battled injury as a result.  The centering experience of movement is one of my favorite ways to manage stress, but after injuring my knee while running in 2017, it was clear that I had to find a new approach to exercise. “

“ While attending the national dietetics conference in 2018, I learned about a new approach to body weight management which emphasized the preservation lean body mass through strength training while facilitating the loss of body fat with individualized nutrition. This approach, Metabolism Based Eating, was developed by a team of researchers Dr. Todd Miller and Stephanie Mull, and was the beginning of my journey with strength based fat loss programming for my clients. It has been my privilege to become a provider of Metabolism Based Eating programs and a part of the MBE team.”

Strength training has been the missing link for me on my journey of well-being. It is important to specify strength training. There are endless opinions, just like in the field of nutrition, about what, when, and how to make your body stronger. My approach has been to work with a certified trainer, working on total body, hypertrophy style weight training 3 days per week. I reduced cardio to a couple of 30min sessions each week and placed a lot more emphasis on recovery. Breakthrough! As a result I was able to add lean mass, rehab from my injuries and regain a sense of confidence in my body.

Physical strength is an essential component of health and well being. I encourage all of my clients to continue or begin working on strength training as the primary means of exercising during a fat-loss program.

Philosophy

“My goal for lifestyle focused health and nutrition is to help clients feel at peace with their bodies and their food, physically strong enough to live the life of their choosing – from playing with their kids or grand kids to running a fortune 500 company. I work with each client to achieve a nutrition program that can be the basis of sustainable lifestyle changes.”

Dexa Body Composition Testing

Arguably the most common method of tracking progress, weighing yourself is also one of the most useless. Body weight can change by the hour based on hydration level, salt intake, hormonal fluctuations, gut residue, etc., leaving you wildly frustrated as to why your program isn’t working. A much more useful mode of measuring progress, DEXA scan body composition uses low energy, quantitative vs. diagnostic x-ray to measure the proportions of fat, muscle, and bone in the body, and is considered as the gold standard, most thoroughly and scientifically validated method for body fat measurement. This means we can go beyond simply measuring weight loss and start focusing on FAT loss.

Get a comprehensive report of your body composition so you can view your current progress. Going forward, repeat tests for comparative analysis enables you to track your progress over time. Your certified testing specialist offers a thorough explanation of your results and offers suggestions to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.

Metabolic Testing

A Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test should be the foundation of any sensible eating and overall nutritional strategy. The number of calories your body burns at rest accounts for roughly 70% of your total caloric burn throughout the day. By knowing your RMR, we can determine a calorie target that is specific to your unique physiology, and appropriate for your health and fitness goals.

Eliminate the guesswork. An individual’s requirement for energy and how they burn that energy is different for everyone and depends on their exercise regimens. If you are unaware of how many calories you bring in or burn during a 24 hour period, accomplishing your health, fitness, and physique goals can be quite daunting.
